Fruit and Nuts

Dr Perricone recommends that high-GI foods (especially fruits, grains and beans) should be severely limited if a person wants to lose weight and is following the diet specifically as a weight loss diet. In the Perricone Promise, he goes on to say that all the high-GI can be eaten, albeit in very small amounts, only after desired weight loss has been achieved. Dr Perricone does ban the humble potato at all times and does not recommend wheat to be eaten either, but advises that other grains can be used instead of wheat.

Dr Perricone’s rule of thumb for foods to avoid – if the food contains flour and/or sugar (or any other sweetener) it will be pro-inflammatory and should be avoided.

The following foods are restricted on the Perricone diet:

  • Alcohol - all types of alcohol (but red wine is allowed occasionally)
  • Bakery produce – bagels, breads, buns, cakes, croissants, donuts, muffins, rolls, pastry, pita bread
  • Biscuits and crackers – all types, except linseed crackers which are allowed
  • Cereals - any packaged, processed cereals (except whole oats)
  • Coffee - all types of coffee
  • Corn and corn products – bread, chips, muffins, starch, syrup, tacos, tortillas
  • Dairy - cow’s milk, cow’s milk cheeses (especially the soft types)
  • Fast foods – from any type of fast food restaurants (Burger King, Hungry Jacks, KFC, McDonalds, Taco Bell etc)
  • Flour and flour products – crepes, pancakes, waffles (especially from white, processed flour)
  • Fruit juices - any purchased juices (except for pure freshly squeezed juice which is allowed on occasion)
  • Pasta - any type, plus all noodles
  • Rice - especially white rice
  • Saturated fat – deep fried foods, margarine, peanut butter, shortening (especially those with hydrogenated oils)
  • Sauces - any types of pre-made sauces, marinades and relishes
  • Snack foods – chips, lollies, popcorn
  • Soft drinks – any type of fizzy drinks
  • Sweeteners - honey, golden syrup, molasses, sugar (any type)
  • Sweets - frozen yoghurt, frozen sorbet, granola/nut/cereal/protein bars, ice cream, jam, jelly, marmalade, preserve, pudding
  • Take-away foods – egg rolls, hot dogs, pizza
  • Vegetables - corn, potatoes

For more detailed information about the amount of each food restricted, see the Perricone Diet official web site, which also has an example diet plan.
