Aspartic acid facts

  • Aspartic acid is a non-essential amino acid
  • Aspartic acid functions as a building block of protein in the body
  • Aspartic acid is found in high levels in plant proteins
  • Aspartic acid is synthesised from glutamic acid
  • Aspartic acid is found in sugar cane and molasses

Aspartic acid is a non-essential amino acid, which means the body can metabolise (or make) it from the essential amino acids. It is not necessarily required in high levels in the diet.

Aspartic acid, just like all the other amino acids, is one of the building blocks of all proteins in the body, which not only include muscles, but also all the other proteins required for normal function of the body.

Aspartic acid is found in plentiful amounts in plant proteins, especially in all the sprouting seeds.

The amino acid glutamic acid is involved in the production of aspartic acid in the body.

Aspartic acid was originally found in sugar cane and molasses, from which it was first isolated and studied.
