Chloride facts

  • Chloride is an electrolyte
  • Chloride works with the other electrolytes
  • Sufficient betacarotene is needed to absorb chloride

Chloride is one of the electrolyte minerals (the others are calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and sodium), which carries an electrical charge, which is negative for chloride. Because electrolytes have electrical charges, they can move easily back and forth through cell membranes. This is important because as they move into a cell, they carry other nutrients in with them and as they move out of it, they carry out waste products and excess water.

Chloride works with the other electrolytes to help regulate the level of fluid between the cells, throughout the whole body.

The body requires a sufficient amount of betacarotene to enable the body adequately uptake and absorb chloride from the foods eaten.
