Molybdenum Deficiency

Deficiency of molybdenum is rare and if it does occur can accompany another health condition. The following people may be at risk of molybdenum deficiency in the rare occasions that it does occur:

  • People eating mainly refined foods
    People that have a diet which consists of mainly eating foods which are highly refined and not eating many natural, unprocessed foods may become deficient in molybdenum as a great deal of the molybdenum in foods is lost in processing.
  • People taking high copper supplements
    People who are taking high levels of copper supplements, without also supplementing molybdenum could become deficient in molybdenum, as copper can compete with and block molybdenum absorption.

Molybdenum Deficiency Symptoms

While molybdenum deficiency symptoms have not been reported, the following are the molybdenum deficiency symptoms that could occur:

  • Elevated excretion of enzymes
  • Gout
  • Low uric acid levels
  • Mental disturbances
  • Susceptibility to sulphite toxicity
