Choline Interactions

Interactions with Medications and Supplements

The following are the medications and supplements that are more likely to cause a reaction with choline supplements:

  • Methotrexate
The medication methotrexate, which is used for treating many types of cancer, can decrease the absorption of choline from foods that are eaten and supplementation may be needed to prevent a choline deficiency.
  • Phenobarbital
The medication phenobarbital, which is used for as a sedative, can decrease the absorption of choline from foods that are eaten and supplementation may be needed to prevent a choline deficiency.
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin)
High levels of vitamin B3 (niacin) in the form of nicotinic acid or nicotinamide (which are the forms found in supplements) may decrease the effectiveness of choline from foods that are eaten, inactivating the effect of choline and supplementation may be needed to prevent a choline deficiency.
Choline has interactions with a number of medications and can even affect the outcome of a specific lab test

Other Interactions with choline

Apart from the interactions above, choline does not have any has interactions with other substances.

Choline's effect on lab tests

In addition to the interactions with medications, choline has an effect on blood lab tests, as follows:

  • Choline / Sphingomyelin test
Choline may cause inaccurate test results if the amniotic fluid of a pregnant woman is being tested with a choline / sphingomyelin test. Pregnant women taking choline supplements should stop taking them at least 3-4 days prior to the test to ensure accurate results.
