There is no current recommended daily intake or tolerable upper intake for cysteine.
Therapeutic dosage
There is a therapeutic dosage for cysteine, which is the most that can be safely taken for a short period before supplementation produces side effects:
- Adults: 200-500mg per day
Any cysteine supplementation has to be taken together with supplementation of vitamin B6 and vitamin C to prevent cysteine toxicity and side effects.

The higher levels of cysteine should only be taken under strict medical supervision because supplementation at very high levels may cause some side effects in some people.
