Certain people should not take phenylalanine supplements:
- People with liver or kidney disease
- People with diabetes
- People with any type of medical condition
- People with cancer, especially skin cancer
- People with an anxiety disorder
- People with high blood pressure
- People with heart disease
- People with phenylketonuria
- People taking antidepressants (SSRI, MAO inhibitors etc)
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
People with any of the conditions above should consult their doctor before taking any phenylalanine supplements, as it could make their condition much worse.
Certain people should not take phenylalanine supplements - people with any type of medical condition, people taking anti-depressants, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
Toxic Levels of Phenylalanine
Phenylalanine may produce some toxicity at doses greater than 2000mg per day.
Overdosage and Toxicity Symptoms
Toxicity is rare in dietary intake, but excessive supplements can cause the following side effect symptoms:
- Adverse interaction with antidepressant medications
- Adverse reaction with stimulants
- Elevate blood pressure
- Headache
- Heartburn
- Nausea
- Nerve damage (only in really excessive amounts)
People experiencing any side effects should discontinue their supplements and speak to their doctor.
